Eight months have passed since the electrifying conclusion of Bad Monkey's Season 1, and six months after Apple TV announced its renewal. Executive producer Bill Lawrence shared with TVLine that the creative team is on the brink of completing the writing process for Season 2, with filming set to commence this fall.
“The writers are almost done,” Lawrence revealed. “We’ve already shot a scene from Season 2 in Florida, as production moves to California. This marks the official start of production towards the end of September.” In other words, fans should anticipate a release no earlier than 2026.
Regarding the storyline, Lawrence confirmed their intention to adapt the second Andrew Yancy-centric novel, “Razor Girl,” for a future season. However, Season 2 will introduce an entirely original narrative, crafted with insights from author Carl Hiaasen.
“‘Razor Girl’ is an exceptional novel for readers, yet it diverges from the characters established in the first book,” Lawrence elaborated. “Our goal was to keep some beloved characters from the first season at the forefront in the second, such as Rosa, portrayed by Natalie Martinez. Although Season 2 tells an original story, we remain devoted fans of Carl Hiaasen’s work. Moreover, Carl actively consults on the show and has been instrumental in our creative process.”
Starring Vince Vaughn as Andrew Yancy, a suspended police detective who delved into a peculiar crime in the Florida Keys during Season 1, the series also features Martinez as coroner Rosa, who blossomed into Yancy's love interest. Rob Delaney and Meredith Hagner played Nick and Eve Stripling, conniving spouses, while the ensemble included Ronald Peet as Neville, John Ortiz as Ro, Jodie Turner-Smith as Gracie (aka the Dragon Queen), and Michelle Monaghan as Bonnie.
Bad Monkey concluded its inaugural season in October. The finale saw Yancy and Rosa deciding to part ways, with Yancy's friend Ro enticing him to explore another case. The first season was based on Hiaasen's 2013 novel, “Bad Monkey,” while “Razor Girl” was published in 2016.
