The generous spirit of longtime showbiz investor and film producer Len Blavatnik has once again graced the world of cinematic education. Through his family foundation, a remarkable $25 million donation has been made to USC's School of Cinematic Arts. This gift will establish the prestigious Blavatnik Center for Virtual Production, marking a significant leap forward in the evolution of modern filmmaking.
Spanning an impressive 15,000 square feet, the Blavatnik Center aims to expand USC's virtual production curriculum. This initiative is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of all facets of virtual production, including the cutting-edge generative AI tools that are reshaping the industry. Blavatnik, the visionary founder of Access Industries—whose interests span from Warner Music Group to A24—believes in nurturing the next generation of filmmakers.
"Virtual production has seamlessly woven itself into the very fabric of filmmaking, driven by the boundless creativity of the next generation," said Blavatnik, founder of the Blavatnik Family Foundation. His words resonate with pride and hope: "I am deeply honored to support this institution and empower young filmmakers with the tools and resources they need to master these transformative technologies, ensuring their leadership in shaping the future of the industry."
The Blavatnik Center will feature two stages adorned with wraparound LED panel walls, alongside state-of-the-art performance capture, camera tracking, and lighting systems. According to USC, "these stages can operate independently or be combined to form a large production set, offering students unparalleled flexibility. Additionally, the center will house multiple classrooms and labs equipped with computers featuring real-time 3D design software and expansive digital asset libraries."

Currently spearheaded by Habib Zargarpour—who pioneered the Virtual Production System in groundbreaking films like "The Jungle Book" and "Ready Player One"—the virtual production curriculum at USC also benefits from the expertise of Scott Kroopf, leader of the producing track at the School of Cinematic Arts; Ken Williams, executive director and CEO of the Entertainment Technology Center at USC; and Brad Kean, director of Creative Technology at the School of Cinematic Arts. Together, they form a powerhouse team dedicated to pushing the boundaries of cinematic innovation.
